Peridot BOTM

Another month has come and gone, and we’re about to transition into the height of summer in August. Those of you who are lucky enough to be summer babies and are celebrating your birthday this month, will be familiar with August’s official birthstone, Peridot.

Chosen as the official birthstone for August, because of its striking, vivid-green colouring, the gemstone Peridot is often referred to as ‘The Evening Emerald’ due to its soft, alluring glow under a lantern or starlight sky.

Tying in with one of Pantone’s official SS16 colours, Green Flash, the same yellow/lime green hue to that of Peridot has been incredibly popular this year in both fashion and interior design. Paired with evening gowns for a pop of colour, or added to an everyday look for a summery glow, Peridot has become a highly desirable stone due to its sun-saturated tone.

Throughout history, Peridot has been an enigma, shrouded with mysterious folk lore and mythology. It’s unworldly, green glow captured the hearts of even the ancient Egyptians, with it said that Cleopatra favoured the stone over its twilight cousin, Emerald. Whilst the stone has also been linked to the Eqyptian goddess of Nature, and the Hawaiian goddess Pele – understandably so when the natural green hue of Peridot conjures strong imagery of beautiful, untouched landscapes and lush greenery.

When you’ve achieved a sun-kissed glow (whether it be from a tropical holiday or a bottle!) you can afford to experiment with colours and shades that you might usually have overlooked. Peridot green is a stunning shade that seriously complements tanned skin tones, creating a beautiful, luminous contrast. Incorporate the shade into your look by opting for floating fabrics and asymmetric designs to ensure you have that contemporary feel. If colour blocking is a little too daunting for you though, why not opt for Peridot embellishments within your jewellery – a chic pair of drop earrings, or a long pendant will add interest and a splash of colour. If you’re really looking to impress, opt for a diamond cluster design for extra sparkle!
